What should you know about stage 1 TNBC?

TNBC means the cancer cells do not have the hormone receptors or HER2 protein used to guide some other breast cancer treatments. Stage 1 describes a small, early cancer without evidence in the assessed lymph nodes. The exact stage also depends on tumour size, grade, lymph-node findings and test results.

The diagnosis does not predict one identical course for everyone. A pathology review helps the team understand how the cells look and behave, while imaging and examination help define the area needing treatment.

Ask the breast team to explain whether surgery is recommended first and whether breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy fits your situation. Chemotherapy may be discussed before or after surgery because TNBC can respond to medicines that travel through the bloodstream.

Some people may also be offered immunotherapy or a PARP inhibitor when particular clinical and genetic features apply. Discuss genetic counselling and testing when family history or tumour findings make it relevant. Keep a written list of medicines and side effects during treatment.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, chills, breathing difficulty, chest pain, a rapidly worsening wound, uncontrolled vomiting, or inability to drink. During treatment, report new numbness, severe diarrhoea, a spreading rash, or marked weakness because these symptoms may need same-day advice.
