Stage 1 compression garment: what to know

Stage 1 lymphoedema usually describes soft swelling that may reduce when the affected limb is elevated. The skin can feel tight, heavy, or less comfortable in clothing. A compression garment applies graduated pressure, which can help limit fluid build-up and support movement of fluid through nearby tissues.

The garment is not a substitute for assessment. Swelling can also result from infection, a clot, injury, or another problem. A lymphoedema clinician should check the limb and choose the garment style, pressure, and fit.

Put it on as instructed, often early in the day before swelling increases, and smooth out folds or rolled edges. It should feel supportive without causing numbness, pins and needles, unusual coldness, colour change, or pain. Wash and dry it according to the maker’s instructions so its shape and pressure are maintained.

Keep the skin clean and moisturised, allowing moisturiser to absorb before dressing. Gentle activity, comfortable movement, and the lymphoedema exercises taught by your therapist can complement compression. Arrange a refit if the garment slips, cuts into skin, or becomes difficult to put on.

Remove the garment and seek prompt advice if swelling suddenly worsens, the limb becomes red or hot, pain develops, or you feel feverish. Get urgent help for sudden breathlessness or chest pain. A break in the skin, leaking fluid, or a new rash also needs clinical review.

Ask: Is this swelling definitely lymphoedema? Which garment style and pressure suit me? How many hours should I wear it? How do I check my skin? When should it be replaced or refitted? Would lymphoedema therapy add useful exercises or skin care?
