What should you know about stage 0 cervical cancer?

Stage 0 is often used for a very early cervical abnormality, sometimes called carcinoma in situ or a high-grade precancerous change. The cells are confined to the surface lining and have not invaded deeper cervical tissue. A screening result does not by itself establish this stage. Colposcopy lets a clinician examine the cervix more closely, and a biopsy provides tissue for diagnosis. The final plan depends on the pathology result, the area involved, previous results, age, pregnancy plans and whether the abnormal cells have been fully removed.

Attend the recommended cervical screening, colposcopy and follow-up appointments, even when you have no symptoms. Treatment may involve removing the affected area with a cone biopsy. Some people need close monitoring after treatment, while others may discuss hysterectomy when there is a specific medical reason or when childbearing is complete. Radiotherapy or brachytherapy are generally considered in different clinical situations, such as more invasive disease, rather than assumed from a stage 0 label. Tell the team about pregnancy, fertility wishes, bleeding and any prior cervical procedures.

Arrange medical review for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge or pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding with dizziness, severe pelvic pain, fainting or fever after a cervical procedure. These symptoms need assessment but do not establish that cervical cancer has invaded or progressed.
