What should you know about SSSS impetigo?

How the structures involved in Impetigo differ from normal

Short answer

SSSS and impetigo are related staphylococcal skin problems, but SSSS is a serious illness requiring urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical clue
Oozing sores with yellow-brown crusts
SSSS clue
Tender widespread redness, blisters, or peeling
Spread prevention
Handwashing and separate towels

What it means

Impetigo is a contagious infection that often causes small sores, oozing, and yellow-brown crusts. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, or SSSS, occurs when bacterial toxins affect the outer layer of skin, causing tenderness, redness, fragile blisters, and sheets of peeling skin. It is more concerning than a small localised patch and can cause fluid loss and difficulty protecting the skin. Atopic dermatitis can make skin more vulnerable to infection.

What to do next

Arrange prompt clinical assessment for suspected impetigo, especially when the area is spreading, painful, or affecting a young child. A clinician may prescribe treatment applied to the skin or antibiotics taken by mouth, depending on the extent and severity. Wash hands after touching the area, keep nails short, avoid sharing towels, and cover oozing sores when practical. Do not peel crusts or share prescribed medicine.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for widespread redness or peeling, severe tenderness, fever, unusual sleepiness, poor drinking, reduced urination, facial involvement, or a child who appears unwell. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips and tongue requires emergency help. Rapid change matters even when the original sore looked minor.

Questions for your doctor

Does this look like impetigo or SSSS? Is treatment for the skin enough, or are oral antibiotics needed? How should clothing, towels, and close contacts be managed? When can school, nursery, work, or sport safely resume?
