What should you know about SSRI loss of appetite?

Some people notice nausea, early fullness, altered taste or less interest in food when an SSRI is started or its dose changes. Appetite can also fall during depression, viral illness, gastritis, gastroenteritis or another digestive problem. The medicine may be involved when the change follows treatment closely, but timing alone is not proof. Consider what you can eat and drink, whether weight is changing, and whether pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or low mood is present.

Tell the prescriber about the appetite change and do not alter or stop the SSRI without advice. Try small, frequent meals and nourishing foods that are easy to tolerate; drink regularly, especially if nausea or loose stools are present. Keep a brief record of meals, fluids, symptoms and medicines. A clinician can check for medication effects, dehydration, mood symptoms and digestive causes, then discuss a suitable adjustment if needed.

Seek urgent care for inability to keep fluids down, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion, fainting or signs of severe dehydration. Arrange prompt review for ongoing weight loss, yellowing of the skin or eyes, persistent vomiting, fever, or appetite loss that is stopping normal daily activities. Thoughts of self-harm require immediate emergency support.

Ask whether the appetite change fits the SSRI and whether another medicine or illness could be responsible. Discuss hydration, nutritional support, warning signs, a review of mood, and how any dose change would be made safely.
