What should you know about squamous sarcoma skin cancer?

Squamous cell carcinoma is a skin cancer arising from squamous cells in the outer skin layer. It may appear as a rough, scaly patch, a firm bump, a wart-like growth, or a sore that does not heal. It can occur on sun-exposed skin and may be tender, crusted, or prone to bleeding.

A similar-looking spot can have a non-cancerous cause, so appearance cannot settle the diagnosis. A dermatologist may examine the lesion and take a biopsy. The tissue findings describe the tumour and help determine whether local treatment is enough or whether wider assessment is needed.

Arrange a dermatology review for a persistent, enlarging, crusted, or repeatedly bleeding lesion. Do not burn, freeze, or cut it yourself. Record its location and changes, keep the area protected from friction, and bring details of previous skin cancers or immune-system conditions.

Treatment may involve surgical excision, Mohs surgery, or another form of skin cancer surgery. The choice depends on the lesion's size, depth, position, borders, and tissue features. Ask how the wound will be closed and how follow-up will be organised.

Seek prompt review if a skin spot grows, becomes painful, develops a firm edge, or fails to heal. Get urgent medical help for bleeding that does not stop with direct pressure, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or severe pain after an injury or procedure.

Ask whether a biopsy is needed, which procedure is suitable for the site, whether the edges need special microscopic checking, and what signs should prompt an earlier follow-up visit. Ask how to protect the treated area while it heals.
