What should you know about squamous cell carcinoma bladder cancer?

Squamous cell carcinoma is named for the flat cells seen under a microscope. In the bladder, the diagnosis is different from squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, even though the cell type has the same name. A tissue sample is needed because blood in the urine, burning, urgency or frequent urination can have many causes. Imaging and examination help the team understand the bladder wall and nearby structures.

Arrange prompt review with a urologist or cancer specialist. Bring a list of urinary symptoms, medicines and previous procedures. Ask how the tissue diagnosis was made, whether the cancer is limited to the bladder, and which treatments fit the findings. Operations, medicines or radiation may be discussed according to the individual situation; a skin procedure such as Mohs Surgery is not the usual framework for a bladder tumour.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or persistent blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal or back pain, fever with urinary symptoms, faintness or marked weakness. These problems can reflect bleeding, blockage or infection and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what the pathology report shows, whether more tests are needed, how treatment could affect urination, and how symptoms will be monitored. Clarify who will coordinate urology, oncology and supportive care.
