Spotting two days after intercourse: what to know

Friction or a small surface injury can produce light blood after sex, sometimes noticed later. A sensitive cervix, vaginal dryness, hormonal contraception, or infection can have a similar presentation. Chlamydia may cause bleeding after sex with discharge, pelvic pain, or pain when urinating. Polyps and fibroids can contribute to irregular bleeding. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding after intercourse; this symptom cannot diagnose either condition.

Record when sex occurred, when spotting began, its colour and amount, and any pain, discharge, contraceptive changes, or pregnancy possibility. Avoid further irritation until bleeding and discomfort settle. Arrange a clinical review if this happens again, follows sex repeatedly, or occurs with pelvic pain or unusual discharge. A clinician may offer pregnancy and infection testing, an examination, and cervical screening when appropriate.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy and pain. Get prompt assessment for foul-smelling discharge, significant pain during sex, or bleeding after menopause. If the bleeding is light but recurrent, book a review even when each episode stops on its own.
