Spotting during sex after your period

A small amount of blood after sex can follow friction, dryness, or a sensitive cervix, especially when the vagina has not fully recovered from recent bleeding. Hormonal contraception, infection, cervical polyps, fibroids, and changes on the cervix can also cause bleeding between periods. Chlamydia may cause bleeding after sex, sometimes without obvious symptoms. Bleeding is a presentation of Cervical Dysplasia or Cervical Cancer in some people; it does not show that you have either condition.

Record whether the blood was pink, red, or brown; whether it happened once or repeatedly; and whether there was pain, discharge, odour, itching, or urinary discomfort. This helps a clinician choose the right examination or tests.

Arrange a medical appointment if the spotting recurs, happens after most episodes of sex, or has no clear explanation. Until then, use a pad rather than a tampon, consider a water-based lubricant if dryness is present, and pause sex if it causes bleeding or discomfort. Do not douche. A clinician may discuss contraception, test for infection, examine the vagina and cervix, or arrange further assessment depending on your history.

Seek urgent care if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint, develop severe pelvic pain, have fever, or might be pregnant. Get prompt advice for bleeding with a missed period or one-sided pain. These features can require assessment sooner than a routine appointment.

Ask whether you need infection testing, cervical screening review, or an examination. Mention your last period, contraception, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and any new partner. Ask which symptoms should bring you back sooner and when sex can safely resume.
