Spotting Around Conception

People may use conception to describe sex near ovulation, fertilisation, or the days when an early pregnancy starts. Those events cannot be dated precisely from spotting. Light pink or brown marks may come from the cervix, hormonal changes, an approaching period, or irritation after sex. Some people notice no bleeding at all.

Spotting is therefore not a reliable pregnancy test. It can also occur with infection or other causes of bleeding between periods, including polyps, fibroids, or cervical conditions. The direction matters: spotting is a symptom to assess, not evidence that pregnancy is present or absent.

Record when the spotting began, its colour and amount, and whether cramps or discharge are present. Take a home pregnancy test when your period is due or according to the test instructions; testing too early can be unhelpful. If the result is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat the test as advised or contact a clinician. Use pads if bleeding continues.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, substantial dizziness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. If a pregnancy test is positive and bleeding or pain occurs, contact a healthcare service promptly. Recurrent spotting, bleeding after sex, or unusual discharge also merits a routine assessment.

Ask when to test, whether your contraception or medicines could affect bleeding, and whether infection testing is appropriate. If pregnancy is confirmed, ask which service to contact if spotting returns and which warning signs require urgent care.
