Spotting and Bleeding After Sex

Dryness, friction, a small surface injury, or a sensitive cervix can cause light bleeding. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause may make vaginal tissue thinner, drier, and more prone to irritation. Chlamydia can inflame the cervix and may occur with discharge, pelvic pain, or urinary discomfort.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, or vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex. Bleeding is not proof of cancer; an examination is needed to identify the cause. Recent procedures, pregnancy possibility, contraception, and the amount and recurrence of bleeding are relevant details.

Pause penetrative sex if it causes pain or bleeding, and note whether bleeding stops when irritation settles. Arrange infection testing after unprotected sex or with a new partner. Book a clinician review for repeated episodes, even when the bleeding is light. Depending on your history, assessment may include a pelvic examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical screening, or further investigation such as a cone biopsy.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy and pain. Arrange a prompt appointment if bleeding keeps returning, occurs after menopause, or comes with unusual discharge, sores, or worsening pain.
