Spotting after sex after a miscarriage may reflect healing, but it warrants advice if it persists or comes with pain or illness. The cervix and uterus may remain sensitive while the body recovers, and intercourse can irritate healing tissue. The safest timing for sex depends on your symptoms and the advice given during your miscarriage care.

Light spotting can occur during recovery, but bleeding that becomes heavier, develops an unpleasant smell, or returns after settling needs review. Ongoing pregnancy tissue, infection, or a new pregnancy may need consideration. The pattern cannot be diagnosed from colour alone.

Note when the miscarriage occurred, when bleeding stopped or changed, the timing of intercourse, and any cramps, fever, dizziness, or unusual discharge. A transvaginal ultrasound may help assess the uterus when symptoms or examination findings suggest it is needed.

Stop intercourse if it causes bleeding or pain and use pads to observe the amount. Seek urgent care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, fever, chills, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal significant bleeding, infection, or a pregnancy-related emergency. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
