Spotting After Intercourse While Pregnant

Pregnancy increases blood flow and sensitivity around the cervix, so contact during intercourse can lead to light spotting. This explanation cannot be assumed without considering the pregnancy stage, bleeding pattern, pain, and other symptoms. Infection such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding and requires testing and treatment advice. Cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer can present with bleeding after contact, although spotting does not establish either condition. Uterine conditions such as endometrial polyps, uterine fibroids, or womb cancer can also present with bleeding outside expected menstrual patterns. Keep any pregnancy records available and tell the maternity team about the exact timing and amount.

Contact your maternity unit, obstetric clinician, or pregnancy care service for advice, even if the spotting is light and has stopped. Describe the colour, amount, duration, pain, contractions, fluid leakage, dizziness, and fetal movement when relevant to your stage of pregnancy. Use a pad or liner to observe the bleeding and avoid intercourse or inserting anything until a clinician advises that it is appropriate. Do not self-treat a suspected infection during pregnancy without medical guidance. The care team may arrange an examination, pregnancy assessment, or testing based on your symptoms.

Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, faintness, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, fluid leakage, regular contractions, or reduced fetal movement when you normally feel movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are worsening or you feel seriously unwell. Use your local emergency service or maternity emergency pathway.
