Spotting 2 days before your period: could you be pregnant?

A small amount of pink, red, or brown blood before an expected period may reflect normal cycle variation, hormonal contraception, cervical irritation, or an infection. Early pregnancy can also involve light bleeding, but the timing and appearance are not diagnostic. A symptom does not establish its cause.

Bleeding between periods that repeats, follows sex, or comes with pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or pain when urinating deserves a clinical review. Causes can include cervical conditions, polyps, fibroids, or sexually transmitted infection.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home urine test from the day your period is expected, following the instructions carefully. If the result is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat the test after a short interval or contact a clinician. Record the first day, colour, flow, and any cramps.

Use pads if you need to monitor flow. Do not take a new medicine to stop bleeding without advice. If you had unprotected sex and do not want pregnancy, ask a pharmacist or clinician promptly about time-sensitive emergency contraception options.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided lower-abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, heavy bleeding, or feeling suddenly unwell, especially with a positive pregnancy test. These symptoms need prompt assessment for complications, including ectopic pregnancy.
