Spotting 1 Day Before Your Period: Could You Be Pregnant?

Light spotting before a period may be the beginning of menstrual bleeding, a cycle variation, or a response to hormonal contraception. Early pregnancy can also involve light bleeding, but spotting is not a reliable way to confirm or exclude pregnancy. Cervical irritation, Chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, and other causes of bleeding between periods can look similar. Womb cancer and cervical cancer are less common explanations, and the symptom does not mean that either condition is present.

Pregnancy possibility depends on sexual exposure and contraception, not on the shade or exact timing of blood. Note whether the bleeding becomes a usual period, whether it stops, and whether you develop pain, dizziness, or other symptoms.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test when your period is due or later, following the kit instructions. If the result is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat the test after a short interval or contact a clinician. Record the bleeding, cycle dates, contraception, and any pain. Arrange a review for recurrent spotting, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or a cycle change that continues.

Get urgent medical help if you may be pregnant and have one-sided or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, or increasing bleeding. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pelvic pain, or feeling very unwell. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether a home test is positive or negative.
