What should you know about spots on the penile?

Location and appearance matter. A spot on hair-bearing skin may involve a follicle, while smooth glans skin has different causes. Red, tender bumps can follow friction, shaving, sweating, or follicle inflammation; Folliculitis describes this pattern. Acne can produce pimples, although acne elsewhere does not explain every genital mark. Sexual contact, a new product, discharge, ulcers, or clustered blisters change the assessment.

Many penile spots are not urgent, but a photo alone cannot reliably identify them. Do not assume a spot is an STI or dismiss one that is new. A clinician may ask about pain, itch, urinary symptoms, sexual contact, shaving, and whether the mark is changing.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid scrubbing, squeezing, shaving over the area, or applying acne products, antiseptics, or steroid creams without advice. Wear breathable underwear and pause sex if contact causes pain or until a clinician has assessed a new unexplained lesion. Keep the area dry and note whether spots are smooth, raised, blistered, ulcerated, or linked to hair follicles.

Arrange an appointment for persistent, recurrent, painful, itchy, bleeding, ulcerated, or rapidly changing spots, or for discharge, burning urination, swollen groin glands, or fever. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, difficulty passing urine, or rapidly spreading redness. An examination can separate follicle irritation from conditions such as Acne or other genital skin problems.

Ask what the spots resemble, whether testing for an infection is appropriate, whether sexual partners need advice, and which products are safe on genital skin. Tell the clinician when the spots began, whether they followed shaving or sex, and whether you have pain, discharge, or sores.
