What should you know about spots on back of head and neck?

Hair, sweat, collars, helmets, and close shaving can irritate follicles at the scalp edge and neck. Tender red bumps or pustules may fit Folliculitis. Bumps after shaving can be Razor Bumps, particularly when hairs curve back into the skin. Acne can also affect the neck and upper back. Firm, enlarging, draining, or scar-forming bumps should not be labelled from appearance alone.

Clean the area gently after sweating and avoid picking, close shaving, or abrasive brushes while it is inflamed. Keep collars, helmets, pillowcases, and hair tools clean, and choose products that do not leave a heavy residue at the hairline. If shaving triggers bumps, discuss a less close technique with a clinician. Recurrent spots may need prescription treatment or a check for scarring inflammation.

Arrange medical review when spots persist, spread, form deep painful lumps, drain, or leave patches of hair loss or raised scars. Seek prompt advice for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or redness extending beyond the original area. A sore or scaly lesion that bleeds or changes also needs examination.
