Spots around the mouth and chin

Acne commonly forms blackheads, whiteheads, or inflamed spots on the chin and lower face. Perioral dermatitis may look like many small red bumps around the mouth, sometimes with dryness or burning, while sparing the immediate lip edge. Toothpaste, cosmetics, heavy creams, saliva, mask friction, shaving, and steroid creams can irritate this area. Folliculitis is more closely linked to individual hair follicles. The appearance and surrounding skin matter more than location alone.

Wash with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, pat dry, and pause newly introduced or fragranced products. Do not squeeze the spots. Avoid applying a steroid cream around the mouth unless a clinician has specifically advised it, because it can worsen some rashes. Keep lip products on the lips rather than the surrounding skin. If shaving triggers bumps, use a clean razor and avoid repeated passes. A clinician can decide whether Acne, Perioral Dermatitis, or another condition fits and select treatment accordingly.

Seek assessment if the rash persists, burns, spreads toward the nose or eyes, leaves scars, or returns after stopping a product. Get prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or difficulty breathing.
