What should you know about sports shoes gait analysis?

Short answer

Sports shoe gait analysis examines walking or running movement, foot pressure, and shoe interaction to guide practical footwear decisions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is examined

An assessment may compare your usual shoes with other options while you walk, jog, change speed, or perform a sport-specific task. The clinician may observe stride, cadence, ankle and knee motion, balance, foot contact, and how symptoms respond. A pressure plate can show how force is distributed under the foot, while three-dimensional motion capture can record movement of body segments from different angles. These measurements are aids to clinical reasoning, not a diagnosis by themselves.

The result may support a footwear change, a training adjustment, exercise, or referral for custom orthotics when a clear need is identified. A comfortable shoe that suits your activity and fits your foot remains central.

How to prepare

Bring the shoes you train in, any recently changed pair, and notes about when pain appears. Wear clothing that allows the legs and feet to be seen, and describe your usual surfaces, distances, pace, and sport. Ask to test recommendations during the movement that causes trouble. Change one variable at a time when possible, then allow yourself to judge comfort, stability, and symptom response during ordinary training rather than relying on a screen result alone.

When to seek care

Seek clinical assessment when foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back pain persists, causes limping, or worsens after a footwear change. Prompt review is needed for inability to bear weight, significant swelling, deformity, numbness, or weakness. A gait scan should not delay care after an acute injury or explain away symptoms that are progressing.

Questions to ask

What movement or pressure finding relates to my symptoms? Which shoe features should I try, and for which activities? Do I need exercises or orthotics as well as a footwear change? How will we check that the recommendation is helping?

Questions people ask

Does gait analysis tell me which shoe is perfect?

No. It provides movement information; comfort, fit, activity, symptoms, and clinical examination still guide the choice.

Are custom orthotics always needed after a scan?

No. Orthotics are considered when assessment identifies a reason they may help, rather than being an automatic result of scanning.
