What should you know about spontaneous abortions are most commonly caused by?

Short answer
Most early miscarriages are caused by chromosomal changes that prevent a pregnancy from developing normally.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common mechanism
- Chromosomal changes during early development
- Assessment
- Symptoms, examination, and sometimes transvaginal ultrasound
Why miscarriage can happen
Chromosomal changes can arise as an embryo forms and may stop normal growth. They are usually outside a person's control, and one miscarriage does not by itself show that someone caused it or cannot have a healthy pregnancy later.
Other contributors can include problems affecting the uterus or cervix, certain hormonal or medical conditions, infections, or blood-clotting and immune-related disorders. Sometimes no clear cause is found after an individual loss. Bleeding or cramps in pregnancy need assessment because these symptoms can also occur in pregnancies that continue.
What to do after suspected loss
Contact your maternity or gynaecology team if you have bleeding, pain, or a change in pregnancy symptoms. A transvaginal ultrasound may help establish the pregnancy location and whether development is continuing. The clinician may also discuss blood tests, examination, and follow-up based on your symptoms and pregnancy history.
If miscarriage is confirmed, options may include waiting for the tissue to pass, medicines, or a procedure. Your clinician can explain medical management and surgical management, including expected bleeding, follow-up, and warning signs. Emotional support is appropriate whether the loss was early or later.
When urgent care is needed
Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. These signs can indicate significant blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy and should not be judged by bleeding alone.
Questions for your doctor
How will you confirm what is happening and when should I repeat an assessment? Which management option suits my symptoms? Do I need follow-up for my blood group, infection symptoms, or a future pregnancy plan?
