What should you know about spondylosis with myelopathy cervical region?

In the cervical region, spondylosis can reduce the space around the spinal cord. Myelopathy may cause tingling, stiff legs, poor balance, hand clumsiness, or weakness in the arms or legs. Neck pain may be present but does not reliably show how much the cord is affected.

Disc wear, joint enlargement, or thickened supporting tissues can narrow the canal. A clinician checks reflexes, strength, sensation, dexterity, and gait, then uses imaging to assess the cord and the levels involved. Cervical Spondylosis can be present without myelopathy; the word myelopathy signals spinal-cord involvement and changes the urgency of assessment.

Arrange a medical review for deteriorating handwriting, frequent dropping of items, unsteady walking, or spreading limb symptoms. Avoid forceful neck manipulation and reduce fall hazards while waiting. Selected people may receive carefully adapted rehabilitation, but exercises should follow a clinician's assessment. If the cord remains compressed or function is declining, surgery may be discussed. Cervical Fusion or Laminectomy can be used in different situations to create space and stabilise the neck when needed.

Seek urgent care for sudden or rapidly worsening weakness, inability to walk safely, new bladder or bowel difficulties, or numbness around the groin. Neck trauma followed by arm or leg weakness, numbness, or severe pain also warrants immediate assessment.

Ask which cervical levels are involved, whether the cord shows signs of injury, what activities are unsafe, and how quickly treatment should be planned. Discuss the reason for each surgical option if one is proposed.
