What should you know about spirometer with 3 balls?

Short answer

A spirometer with three balls is usually an incentive breathing device that gives a visual guide to slow, deep inhalation; it is not the same as diagnostic spirometry.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the balls show

When you breathe in through the mouthpiece, airflow lifts the balls. The movement shows the force or flow of that breath, while a separate marker may indicate the target. The device encourages regular lung expansion, but it does not measure a complete lung-function profile or confirm a diagnosis.

The target should be realistic for you and set by the clinical team. Trying to lift every ball by sudden, forceful sucking can cause coughing or dizziness and does not necessarily represent a better exercise.

How to use it

Sit upright, relax your shoulders, and breathe out normally before sealing your lips around the mouthpiece. Inhale slowly and deeply so the ball rises, hold the breath briefly if instructed, then remove the mouthpiece and breathe out. Rest between attempts and follow the schedule given after your operation or illness.

When to get help

Stop the exercise and seek advice if it triggers severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, persistent wheezing or coughing that does not settle. Sudden breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion or inability to speak normally needs urgent medical attention rather than further practice.

Questions to ask

Ask how often to use the device, what target is suitable, and whether pain relief or splinting your wound would make deep breaths easier. Confirm how to clean the mouthpiece and when the exercise should be stopped.

Questions people ask

Is a three-ball device a diagnostic spirometer?

Usually not. It is an incentive breathing aid, whereas diagnostic spirometry records and analyses formal breathing manoeuvres.

Should I force all the balls upward?

No. Use a slow, comfortable inhalation and the target supplied by your clinician; forceful sucking may cause coughing or light-headedness.
