What should you know about spirometer volume?

A spirometer may record air breathed out after a normal breath, air exhaled forcefully, or the total air moved after a deepest inhalation. The clinician compares these measurements with your symptoms and expected values for your body, then looks at the pattern across the test.

A lower volume can reflect narrowed airways, limited lung expansion, weak breathing muscles or an incomplete effort. A higher or normal reading does not rule out every breathing problem, particularly when symptoms vary over time.

Wear comfortable clothing and mention recent illness, chest discomfort, dizziness, smoking and all medicines. Use inhalers only as instructed for this appointment, because some medicines can change the reading. Keep your lips firmly around the mouthpiece and copy the technician's timing and effort.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pressure or pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or an inability to speak in complete sentences. If the test causes marked wheezing or persistent dizziness, stop and tell the supervising professional immediately.

Ask which volume was measured, whether the result was repeatable, and whether your medicines were withheld or taken before testing. Ask what the pattern suggests and whether you need follow-up during symptoms or another examination.
