What should you know about spirometer pharmacy?

The word spirometer can describe a device used to measure how air moves in and out of the lungs during spirometry. A different handheld breathing exerciser may use a visible marker or ball to encourage slow, deep inhalation, often during recovery when taking deep breaths is difficult. These devices are not interchangeable. A measurement device needs a standardised test and interpretation; an exerciser is used for coached breathing practice.

Before buying, check the product description, mouthpiece design, cleaning instructions, and whether a clinician asked you to use it. A retail listing alone cannot tell you whether a device is suitable for diagnosing or monitoring a lung condition.

Tell the pharmacist whether you need a lung function test, a breathing exerciser, or a replacement for a device already recommended. Ask how the mouthpiece, tubing, indicator, or chamber should be assembled. Wash your hands, sit upright, and follow the supplied instructions; do not force a breath or continue if you feel faint, wheezy, or unwell. Do not share a mouthpiece. Clean reusable parts as directed and allow them to dry fully.

If the device records readings, keep the dates and circumstances of measurements and show them to the clinician who requested the test. A single reading should be interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, and the testing method.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or chest pain that is severe or new. Arrange prompt clinical advice if breathing is worsening, wheezing is persistent, or using the device repeatedly causes dizziness. A spirometer should not delay assessment of a serious breathing problem.
