What should you know about spirometer peak flow meter?

A peak-flow meter is a handheld tool that records the fastest speed at which you blow out after filling your lungs. A spirometer can record that early airflow as well as air volumes and how the breath changes through the exhalation. Peak-flow readings are often useful for following day-to-day variation when a clinician has given you a personal plan. Spirometry is commonly performed with coached manoeuvres and quality checks. Neither device, by itself, identifies every reason for cough or breathlessness.

For a peak-flow reading, stand or sit as instructed, reset the marker, take a full breath, seal your lips, and blow once with a fast, strong effort. Repeat only as directed and record the result in the way your care plan describes. For spirometry, follow the technician’s coaching and sustain the exhalation until told to stop. Clean reusable equipment as instructed. Share the pattern of readings with symptoms and medicine use rather than changing treatment independently.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or severe chest pain. Contact your clinician promptly if readings repeatedly fall from your usual range, your prescribed reliever is not helping as directed, or you cough blood. Follow your written action plan if you have one; a device reading should not delay urgent care when symptoms are intense.
