What should you know about a spirometer exerciser?

After surgery, illness, or shallow breathing, people may take smaller breaths because of discomfort or fatigue. The visual indicator shows the pace and depth of an inhalation, helping you practise a controlled breath. This is not the same as aerobic exercise and does not diagnose the cause of breathlessness.

Sit upright, relax your shoulders, and place your lips securely around the mouthpiece. Inhale slowly toward the target, hold briefly only if instructed, then breathe normally. Follow your clinician’s schedule, keep equipment clean, and stop if pain, dizziness, or marked breathlessness develops.

Stop and seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or chest pressure. Contact your care team promptly if fever, worsening cough, bloody sputum, or pain makes each breath harder.

Ask what your device is designed to show, how often to use it, whether medicines affect testing, and which change in breathing should prompt a call.
