What should you know about spirometer 1 ball?

The ball rises when air is drawn through the mouthpiece. Its movement is visual feedback, not a diagnosis or a full measurement of lung function. A brief, steady rise usually reflects a controlled inhalation; a sudden jerk may mean the breath was too forceful. The target on a particular device should be set by a clinician if one has been provided.

Sit upright, relax your shoulders, and seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Breathe out normally, then inhale slowly enough to lift the ball while keeping the indicator in its recommended range. Hold the breath briefly if your care team has instructed you to do so, remove the mouthpiece, and breathe out gently. Rest between attempts if you feel light-headed. Keep the mouthpiece clean and do not share it.

Stop and seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or chest pressure. Contact a clinician promptly if breathing becomes harder than usual, you develop a persistent cough with blood, or the device repeatedly cannot be used because inhaling causes marked pain or dizziness.

Ask what target movement is appropriate for you, how often to practise, and whether the device is intended for recovery exercises or monitoring. Clarify what symptoms should make you stop and whether another breathing test is needed.
