What should you know about spider cherry angioma?

Cherry angiomas are usually smooth, round or slightly raised red to purple spots. They can occur on many areas of skin and may become more noticeable over time. A spider angioma is flatter and often blanches briefly when pressed, with fine vessels spreading outward. These names are sometimes mixed together, so an in-person examination matters when the appearance is unusual.

Friction, shaving, or scratching can make a vascular spot bleed. That bleeding does not by itself prove a serious problem, but a spot that changes rapidly, repeatedly crusts, or cannot be distinguished from another skin growth should be checked.

Avoid picking or deliberately removing the spot. Take a clear photograph in good light and note whether its size, colour, surface, or bleeding changes. A clinician can examine it with magnification and decide whether observation is suitable.

If removal is wanted because of bleeding, snagging, or appearance, options may include pulsed dye laser treatment or electrosurgery. The choice depends on the spot's depth, location, skin tone, and whether the diagnosis is clear. Discuss expected healing, temporary redness, pigment changes, and the possibility of a mark before treatment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new spot that grows quickly, develops uneven colour or borders, becomes persistently sore, or bleeds without an obvious injury. Seek prompt care if bleeding will not stop with firm, continuous pressure, or if the area becomes increasingly swollen, warm, or discharging.
