Vitrification uses very rapid cooling and protective laboratory solutions to limit ice-crystal formation. A laboratory first processes the sample and assesses the available sperm before placing suitable material into labelled storage. The sample remains frozen until the fertility team decides whether and how it may be used.

The method may be considered when sperm needs to be preserved before a medical treatment, procedure, travel, or a change in circumstances. Storage does not guarantee a future pregnancy; the result also depends on sperm quality, the egg, the treatment plan, and laboratory handling.
