What should you know about a Spengler otoscope?

The view may help the clinician look for wax, redness, swelling, discharge, a blocked canal, or changes in the eardrum. Findings are considered with pain, fever, hearing change, itching, recent swimming and other symptoms. An otoscope cannot by itself explain every cause of dizziness or hearing loss.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the ear before an examination. Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, previous ear surgery, hearing devices and any sudden change in hearing. Depending on the findings, you may need a GP consultation, a child health consultation, ear treatment or a hearing assessment.

Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, a foreign object, marked swelling, or dizziness with new neurological symptoms. A routine appointment is suitable for persistent blockage, reduced hearing, recurrent discomfort or discharge without severe symptoms.

Ask what was visible, whether wax or infection is present, whether the eardrum could be seen clearly, and what follow-up is needed. If the examination is for a child, ask how to keep the ear comfortable and which changes should trigger another review.
