What should you know about Spectra Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG describes the laser crystal that produces the light. A commonly used longer wavelength can reach deeper structures while being less strongly absorbed by surface pigment than some shorter wavelengths. The same platform can therefore be used in different ways, including selected hair-reduction plans and some vascular or pigment-focused procedures.

The name alone does not tell you the treatment goal. Ask whether the appointment is for hair, a nail concern, a vascular mark or another indication, because the pulse duration, cooling, eye protection and aftercare can differ. A trained clinician should assess your skin and the target before selecting settings.

Tell the clinic about tanning, darker marks after previous injuries, medicines that affect light sensitivity, active infections and any tendency to cold sores. Avoid plucking when hair treatment is planned if the clinic advises that the follicle needs to remain present; follow the specific shaving instructions instead.

Temporary redness, warmth, swelling around follicles or colour change can follow treatment. Use cooling and skincare only as directed, protect the area from sunlight and do not scratch blisters or crusts. Keep the treated site clean and attend review if the response is stronger or slower than expected.

Call the clinic if redness spreads, pain worsens, blisters appear, or the area becomes increasingly tender or produces discharge. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, widespread swelling or an eye injury. A changing mole or unexplained dark spot needs medical assessment and should not be assumed to be a cosmetic target.

Ask which Nd:YAG wavelength and pulse pattern are planned, what the target is, how your skin tone changes the settings, what cooling and eye protection will be used, and which symptoms should trigger a call. Also ask whether another diagnosis should be excluded before treatment.
