What should you know about spasmodic laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation around the voice box. A sudden or spasmodic episode can make the voice rough, weak, or absent and may bring throat discomfort or a dry cough. A common cold can irritate the larynx, while acid reflux can expose it to stomach contents and trigger symptoms. Voice overuse, smoke, and dry air may add irritation.

Hoarseness is a common presentation of laryngitis, but hoarseness has other possible causes. A clinician considers how quickly it began, whether swallowing hurts, whether symptoms follow a cold or reflux, and whether breathing is affected.

Rest your voice by speaking gently and only when needed; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky spaces, and use a humidified environment if it feels soothing. Do not clear the throat repeatedly, since this can increase irritation. If reflux seems relevant, discuss meal timing and trigger foods with a clinician.

A GP consultation can assess persistent or recurring voice change and review medicines, reflux symptoms, and exposure to irritants. Treatment depends on the cause rather than on the sound of the voice alone.

Get emergency help for difficult or noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, sudden swelling of the lips or tongue, or rapidly worsening throat tightness. Arrange prompt review for a voice change that persists, repeated episodes, severe throat pain, or trouble swallowing liquids.

Ask whether a cold, reflux, allergy, voice strain, or medicine could be contributing; how long to rest your voice; whether you need an examination of the larynx; and which symptoms mean you should seek urgent help.
