Folliculitis affects the hair follicles and may appear as small red bumps, pus-filled spots, tenderness, or itch. After a spa or hot pool, prolonged moisture, heat, swimwear friction, and contaminated water can irritate follicles or allow bacteria to multiply. The rash may appear beneath covered areas and can develop after the visit rather than immediately. It can resemble pimples, ingrown hairs, or other skin bumps, so the pattern and exposure history are useful clues.

Shower after water exposure, change out of wet swimwear, and wash it before wearing it again. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid shaving, scrubbing, tight clothing, and squeezing the bumps, and use a clean towel. Do not share towels or swimsuits while the skin is inflamed. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for skin infection when bacterial infection is suspected, but do not use leftover medicine or borrow a prescription.
