Sore throat without tonsils: what should you know?

Tonsil removal removes the tonsils, not every structure at the back of the mouth. Viruses such as a common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may inflame the throat. Post-nasal mucus from allergic rhinitis can irritate it, while acid reflux may bring stomach contents upwards and cause burning or hoarseness. Strep throat and glandular fever are other possibilities that need clinical assessment. A sore throat does not by itself show which cause is present.

Symptoms such as cough, runny nose, fever, swollen neck glands, a rash, or marked tiredness can help a clinician decide what to check. Tonsillitis is less likely after tonsil removal, but throat infections remain possible.

Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Warm drinks or cool foods may feel soothing. Rest your voice if speaking makes the pain worse. A pharmacist can explain whether an appropriate pain reliever is suitable for you, considering pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat viral infections and may delay the right assessment.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or mouth swelling, confusion, or severe dehydration. Arrange medical advice if pain is severe, keeps worsening, returns often, or comes with persistent fever, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening the mouth. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing is needed.
