Sore throat when ovulating

Symptoms that appear mid-cycle may happen at the same time as an unrelated illness. A viral infection such as Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 can irritate the throat. Post-nasal drainage from Allergic Rhinitis may also cause scratchiness, while Acid Reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. Strep Throat and Tonsillitis are other possible causes when swallowing is painful or the tonsils look inflamed. Ovulation can be associated with other body changes, but a persistent throat symptom deserves its own assessment.

Drink fluids regularly, choose soft foods, and try warm drinks or a salt-water gargle if these feel soothing. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Note when the pain began, whether it returns in each cycle, and whether you also have cough, blocked nose, reflux, swollen neck glands, or a rash. Follow the label for any over-the-counter pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or taking other medicines.

Arrange medical advice if the sore throat is severe, lasts beyond several days without improvement, keeps returning, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, confusion, or signs of dehydration. A clinician can examine your throat and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
