What should you know about a sore throat test?

A clinician may look at your throat, feel the glands in your neck, ask about fever, cough and exposure to illness, and then decide whether a throat swab or another test is appropriate. Many sore throats are linked to viral illnesses, where antibiotics do not help.

A throat swab collects material from the back of the throat or tonsils. Depending on the test used, it may look for bacteria such as the cause of Strep Throat, or support assessment of another infection. A rapid result can guide same-day decisions, while a laboratory test may take longer.

A negative result does not explain every cause of throat pain. Irritation from dry air, Allergic Rhinitis or Acid Reflux can also affect the throat. A positive result needs to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination, rather than treated as a diagnosis in isolation.

Follow the testing service's instructions, and tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, recent antibiotics and any known exposure to illness. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery or toothbrushes while you are unwell, and wash your hands regularly.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable pain reliever is safe for you. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they may be unnecessary and can make it harder to interpret a later assessment.

A sore throat may occur with Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19, Tonsillitis or Glandular Fever. If you have been advised to isolate or avoid close contact, follow that advice until you are told it is safe to resume usual activities.

Arrange medical advice if throat pain is severe, keeps worsening, does not begin to settle, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Seek prompt assessment for a persistent high temperature, marked neck swelling, a widespread rash, unusual exhaustion, or symptoms after close contact with someone who has a significant infection.

Get urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have a muffled voice, or cannot open your mouth normally. These symptoms can signal swelling or an infection that needs immediate treatment.
