Sore throat, hoarse voice and ear pain

A common cold can inflame the throat and voice box, while congestion changes pressure around the middle ear. Ear pain may also be referred from an irritated throat, so the ear itself is not always infected. Acid reflux can irritate the voice box and cause hoarseness, throat clearing, or a burning throat. Chronic cough can keep the tissues irritated. Less common causes include thyroid problems or disease affecting the throat, lung, or thyroid; a persistent voice change needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis. A sore throat is a presentation of many conditions, and these symptoms do not identify one cause on their own.

Rest your voice by speaking gently and avoiding shouting or whispering. Drink fluids, use soothing lozenges if suitable, and avoid smoking or smoky rooms. If reflux seems connected, notice whether symptoms follow late meals or lying down and discuss practical changes with a clinician or pharmacist. Pain medicine may help when taken according to the label and your personal medical advice. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into a painful ear.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or severe one-sided throat pain with difficulty opening the mouth. Arrange a review if ear pain is strong, hearing changes, fluid comes from the ear, swallowing becomes difficult, or hoarseness does not settle. A clinician may inspect the throat and ears and decide whether further tests are needed.
