Short answer

A sore throat with clogged ears but no fever often comes from congestion affecting the throat and the tubes that equalise pressure in the ears.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the symptoms may occur together

The nose, throat and middle ear are connected. A common cold, COVID-19 or allergic rhinitis can swell the nasal passages and the pressure-equalising tubes, creating fullness, popping or muffled hearing. A sore throat may come from the same infection or from mucus draining backwards. Fever is not required for these problems. Influenza and strep throat can also cause throat pain, though clogged ears are more often related to congestion or pressure. Acid reflux and dry air may irritate the throat but do not usually cause ear blockage. Earwax and water exposure are separate possibilities.

Measures that may help

Drink fluids, rest and use gentle swallowing or yawning to equalise pressure. Do not put cotton buds or other objects into the ear. Avoid forceful ear-popping, especially during a respiratory infection. Saline nasal spray may help some people; ask a pharmacist before using decongestants, particularly if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma or take regular medicines. Use a suitable pain reliever only as directed and protect your ears from loud sound while hearing feels muffled.

When to arrange care

Seek urgent help for severe breathing or swallowing difficulty, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear or a very unwell appearance. Arrange assessment for significant ear pain, discharge, new one-sided hearing change, symptoms after an injury, or blockage that does not improve. A clinician can examine the ear canal, eardrum, nose and throat rather than assuming the cause.

Questions to ask

Is the ear fullness caused by congestion, wax, pressure or an ear infection? Is my eardrum healthy? Would allergy treatment or a hearing check help, and which medicines are safe for me?

Questions people ask

Can a cold clog your ears without a fever?

Yes. Swelling around the pressure-equalising tubes can cause fullness or muffled hearing without fever.

Should I use cotton buds for a blocked ear?

No. They can push wax deeper or injure the ear canal. A clinician or pharmacist can advise safer options.
