Sore throat and ear pain remedies: what to know

The throat and middle ear share nerve pathways, so inflammation in the throat can feel like ear pain even when the ear is healthy. Common Cold, Influenza and COVID-19 may cause congestion and pressure. Tonsillitis or Strep Throat can cause referred pain, while Allergic Rhinitis may block drainage. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat but is less likely to explain a new severe earache. Ear discharge, reduced hearing or pain on touching the outer ear suggests a separate ear problem that needs examination.

Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. A warm compress held against the outer ear may be comforting; do not put cotton buds, oil or unprescribed drops into the ear. Ask a pharmacist about pain relief that fits your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions and other medicines. Saline nasal care may help congestion when prepared safely. Avoid smoke and keep water out of a painful or draining ear.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe swelling, sudden hearing loss, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness or confusion. Arrange an assessment for ear discharge, persistent pain, worsening symptoms, significant hearing change or symptoms in a young child. A clinician can inspect the throat and ear and determine whether testing or prescription treatment is appropriate.
