Sore throat and bloodshot eyes: what to know

A virus can irritate the throat and the surface of the eyes at the same time. Conjunctivitis may cause redness, watering, discharge, or eyelids that stick together. Allergic conjunctivitis more often brings itching, watering, and symptoms affecting both eyes, sometimes alongside sneezing. Smoke, dust, contact lenses, and dry air can also make eyes look bloodshot without causing a throat infection.

The pattern matters: itch and watery eyes suggest irritation or allergy, while sticky discharge or a spreading illness may need a different assessment. Redness alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash hands often, avoid rubbing the eyes, and do not share towels, pillows, or eye products. A clean cool compress may ease irritation. Stop wearing contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and a clinician advises restarting. Drink fluids and use soothing throat measures such as warm drinks. Do not use another person’s eye drops or leftover antibiotics.

Arrange medical advice if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, redness persists, or the sore throat makes drinking difficult. Seek urgent eye care for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, injury, marked swelling, or redness around the eye. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat.

Ask whether the pattern fits conjunctivitis, allergy, or another infection, and whether you should avoid work, school, or contact lenses. Mention discharge colour, itching, vision changes, contact-lens use, fever, and anyone else who is ill.
