Sore throat after whooping cough vaccine

Soreness in the throat soon after vaccination may come from a separate viral illness, dry air, reflux, or irritation. A vaccine can cause local arm soreness, tiredness, or a mild fever, while respiratory symptoms may simply begin around the same time. A sore throat does not show that the vaccine caused whooping cough or that the vaccine failed.

Whooping cough often starts with a persistent cough that can become intense, especially in babies. A clinician may consider exposure, cough pattern, fever, breathing, age, and vaccination history. Antibiotics are used only when a clinician decides they are appropriate.

Rest, drink fluids, and use soft foods or warm drinks for comfort. Follow the vaccine provider’s advice about pain or fever medicine; ask a pharmacist about age-appropriate options and interactions. Avoid sharing cups and close contact while a respiratory infection is possible, especially around newborns. Keep a note of when the throat pain, cough, fever, rash, or swelling began.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, collapse, or trouble swallowing. Contact a clinician if fever is persistent, the cough is worsening or comes in bouts, the person is unusually sleepy, or drinking and urination are reduced. Babies, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions should be assessed promptly when a concerning cough develops.

Ask whether the throat symptoms fit a separate infection, whether the cough needs testing, and which medicines are safe. Bring the vaccine name and date, the person’s age, allergy history, current medicines, and details of any breathing change.
