A Sore on the Leg That Will Not Heal

A wound can remain open when repeated rubbing, poor skin protection, inflammation, or an underlying medical problem interferes with repair. A sore that bleeds easily, develops a crust, changes shape, or returns in the same place needs particular attention. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are possible causes of a persistent skin sore, but appearance alone cannot confirm either condition.

Keep the area clean, protect it from rubbing, and avoid picking the scab or applying strong acids and unprescribed steroid creams. Note when it started, whether it has enlarged or bled, and photograph it in consistent light. Take a list of medicines and mention any previous injury, surgery, or skin cancer. A clinician may recommend a closer examination and, if needed, a biopsy.

Arrange a dermatology appointment for any leg sore that persists, repeatedly breaks down, or changes in colour, border, surface, or sensation. Seek prompt care for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or swelling of the leg. Do not wait for discomfort, since some concerning skin changes can be subtle.

Ask what features need monitoring, whether the sore should be biopsied, and how to dress it safely. Tell the clinician about sun exposure, previous skin lesions, circulation problems, diabetes, smoking, immune medicines, and anything applied to the area.
