What should you know about a sore lump on the left side of your neck?

A tender lump may be a lymph node responding to a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. Other possibilities include an irritated cyst, a blocked follicle, or muscle and soft-tissue inflammation. The left-sided position alone does not identify the cause; a clinician also considers whether it moves, feels soft or firm, and changes over time.

A neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary. Most evaluations do not begin with a conclusion from location alone. Examination may include the mouth, throat, ears, skin, thyroid, and other lymph-node areas, followed by imaging or sampling if indicated.

Track the lump without squeezing it. Write down its approximate location, tenderness, changes in size, and any fever, sore throat, tooth pain, ear symptoms, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, or skin redness. Mention recent infections, injections, injuries, and medicines at the appointment.

Arrange review if it persists, enlarges, becomes firm or fixed, or returns repeatedly. If a thyroid-related cause is considered, ask how tests relate to possible thyroid removal surgery; surgery is not a conclusion that every neck lump requires.

Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, grows quickly, or occurs with severe illness. Seek prompt medical review for a persistent or enlarging lump, a hard or immobile area, ongoing hoarseness, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These warning features need assessment but cannot diagnose cancer on their own.

Ask which structure the lump may involve, whether infection or inflammation fits the examination, and whether the mouth, throat, thyroid, and ears need checking. Ask whether imaging or sampling is appropriate and which changes should trigger an earlier review.
