What should you know about a sore lump in the side of your neck?

Side-neck lumps are often enlarged lymph nodes responding to infection in the throat, tonsils, ear, teeth, or nearby skin. They may be tender and may change as the illness improves. Other possibilities include a cyst, salivary-gland swelling, thyroid-related disease, or a non-cancerous mass. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer can present with a neck lump, but the presence of a lump does not identify any one diagnosis. A clinician considers its exact position, texture, movement, growth, duration, and accompanying symptoms. Cancer of Unknown Primary is a specialised diagnosis considered when abnormal cancer cells are found but the original site is not yet located.

Record when the swelling began and whether it followed a cold, dental problem, skin irritation, or injury. Notice changes in size, tenderness, firmness, and movement, but do not keep poking it.
