What should you know about a sore lump in your neck?

Tender lumps commonly occur when nearby lymph nodes respond to a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. A blocked gland, cyst, thyroid problem, or other non-cancerous growth can also create swelling. Lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and head and neck cancer are conditions that can present with a neck lump, but a lump alone cannot identify which cause is present.
