The laboratory prepares cells from a suitable specimen and may add fluorescent antibodies that recognise specific markers. Cells travel in a narrow fluid stream so they pass the laser one at a time. Detectors capture the way each cell scatters light and the colours released by its labels. Computer analysis then separates cells into populations with shared characteristics. In oncology, this pattern can help assess blood or marrow disorders and can support classification when abnormal cells are suspected.
