Solar urticaria on the face: what to know

How the structures involved in Hives differ from normal

Short answer

Solar urticaria on the face causes itchy welts or swelling soon after exposed skin receives sunlight or another light source.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Light reaching exposed skin
Common features
Itch, redness, raised welts, or swelling

What it can look and feel like

The reaction may appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, ears, or other uncovered areas. Redness, warmth, stinging, and raised patches can develop quickly, then ease after the skin is shaded. This is a form of hives, rather than ordinary sunburn. Deeper swelling around the lips or eyelids can occur and is called angioedema. A facial rash has several possible causes, so a dermatologist may review the timing, light exposure, medicines, and products involved.

What to do after a flare

Move indoors or cover the exposed area, and avoid rubbing the skin. A cool compress may calm heat and itching. Keep a note of when the reaction began, which areas were exposed, and whether it followed daylight, indoor lighting, or a new product. A clinician may discuss an oral antihistamine and, for selected severe flares, other treatment. Do not apply a prescription cream or take someone else’s medicine without guidance.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology assessment if facial episodes recur, spread beyond exposed skin, or interfere with daily activities. Seek emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Prompt care is also sensible when eyelid or lip swelling is rapidly increasing, because facial swelling can involve deeper tissues.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the timing fits solar urticaria, whether any medicine or skincare product could be contributing, how to protect your face without irritating it, and which treatment is appropriate if a flare affects your lips or eyelids.

Questions people ask

Is solar urticaria the same as sunburn?

No. Solar urticaria is a rapid hive-like reaction after light exposure, while sunburn is delayed skin injury from ultraviolet radiation.

Can facial swelling occur with solar urticaria?

Yes. Swelling around the eyelids or lips can occur; tongue or throat swelling with breathing trouble requires emergency help.
