What should you know about soft tissue ultrasound abdomen?

A clinician moves gel and a handheld probe over the area being assessed. The images can help show the shape and texture of superficial muscles, tendons, collections of fluid, or other soft-tissue changes. Ultrasound is different from an X-ray because it does not use ionising radiation, and the examiner can watch tissues as they move or respond to pressure. The result is interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination; it does not explain every source of abdominal pain.

Follow the instructions from the imaging service, because preparation depends on the body area and the reason for the scan. Wear clothing that allows access to the abdomen and tell the clinician about tender skin, recent procedures, or difficulty lying flat. The probe may feel firm over a sore spot, but you can ask for the pressure to be adjusted. Ask when and how the report will be shared. In some settings, ultrasound may also be used at the point of care or to help plan a procedure such as a cortisone injection.

Arrange medical assessment promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, a rigid or very swollen abdomen, fever with marked tenderness, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek urgent help for sudden pain with weakness, confusion, or difficulty breathing. An ultrasound appointment should not delay emergency assessment when symptoms are intense or rapidly changing.
