Soft tissue sarcoma spread: what to know

Local extension refers to a tumour growing into nearby muscles, fat, nerves, vessels or organs. Distant spread means cells have travelled from the original site to another part of the body. The pattern depends on the tumour’s type and behaviour, and symptoms may be absent even when further assessment is needed.

Doctors combine examination, imaging and biopsy findings to assess the primary tumour and look for disease elsewhere. A scan that raises concern is not the same as a confirmed spread; the team explains what each result means and whether more testing is needed.

Ask which tests are planned, what areas they assess, and when results will be discussed. Keep a record of new pain, breathlessness, persistent cough, weakness, appetite change or other symptoms, while remembering that these symptoms have several possible causes.

Treatment depends on the tumour’s location, pathology and extent. Options may include tumour removal surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or combinations. The aim may be to remove or control disease, ease symptoms, preserve function or support quality of life, depending on the situation.

Contact the care team promptly for rapidly worsening pain, new weakness, persistent vomiting, increasing swelling or a marked change in the original lump. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, confusion or uncontrolled bleeding.
