Soft lump on neck above collarbone: what to know

The area above the collarbone contains lymph nodes, skin, soft tissue, and structures connected with the neck and chest. A recent throat, dental, skin, or respiratory infection can make a node tender or enlarged. A cyst or fatty lump can also feel soft and mobile. Less commonly, persistent enlargement can be associated with lymphoma, thyroid cancer, head and neck cancer, or cancer found after its starting site is not clear. The lump itself cannot identify the cause.

Arrange an appointment if the lump remains, grows, feels fixed, returns, or has no clear explanation. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is changing, and whether it is painful. Mention recent illness, dental problems, skin irritation, swallowing or voice changes, night sweats, or unexplained weight change. A clinician may examine the neck and nearby areas and decide whether imaging, blood tests, or a sample is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, redness with fever, or swelling of the face or neck. Prompt assessment is also sensible for a hard or fixed lump, a lump that keeps enlarging, or one accompanied by persistent hoarseness, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.
